CHSAA B final: St. Agnes wins 63-60

March
7

St. Agnes erased a 16-point third-quarter deficit and defeated Blessed Sacrament, 63-60, in the CHSAA B Division championship tonight at Iona College.

Cardinals senior Jhared Hall had a halfcourt shot at the buzzer bounce off the back of the rim as the two-time city champs had their run ended.

Hall, a 6-foot-2 senior headed to Loyola, scored 16 points for Blessed Sacrament. Sophomore center David Samuels had 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Erik Simpson led St. Agnes with 15 points, including a free throw with 4.5 seconds remaining to make it a three-point game.

Matt Wafula, the Stags’ talented 6-foot-8 senior, overcame a tough first half and six points, four rebounds and three blocks in the fourth quarter. He finished with 10 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks to earn MVP honors.

7:28: Jhared Hall missed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer. St. Agnes win 63-60.

7:23: Samuels dunk. There’s 5.4 seconds left, St. Agnes inbounding under its own basket and leading 62-60. Timeout. A steal on the inbounds seems imminent.

7:21: Unbelievable bad break for B. Sacrament. Jhared Hall went to the basket and had a lay-up touched by Samuels just as it was falling into the net. Goaltending. No basket. St. Agnes, though, missed a front-end of a 1-and-1 for the second straight trip. B. S. ball with 14.2 seconds left, trailing 62-58.

7:19: Wafula put St. Agnes ahead with a basket. After a Blessed Sacrament turnover, Whitaker hit a pair of free throws. Blessed Sacrament again turned the ball over. It’s 62-58 with 31.9 seconds left.

7:15: Jhared Hall just drained a 3-pointer from well beyond NBA range to the tie game at 58-58. There’s 1:52 left.

7:14: St. Agnes leads 58-55 with 2:08 left. B. Sacrament momentarily took the lead on a Samuels lay-up but the Stags have scored on two straight possessions.

7:09: Brandon Whitaker made a fast-break lay-up to extend St. Agnes’ run to 12-3 to open the fourth. The Stags lead 54-49 with 4:23 remaining. Incredible comeback.

7:04: St. Agnes scored the first four points in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 46-46. Meltdown here for B. Sacrament. Hall cannot get the ball against what I’d call a very “soft” box and one.

7:01: St. Agnes junior Javon Rallings hit a lay-up at the buzzer. B. Sacrament leads only 46-42 after three quarters. Should be a thrilling finish.

6:59: Samuels just ended a 11-1 St. Agnes run with four straight points. B. Sacrament is having trouble getting Hall the ball against the box-and-1. The Cardinals still have a 46-40 lead with 19.7 seconds left in the quarter.

6:52: St. Agnes big man Matt Wafula just converted a three-point play. B. Sacrament leads 41-31 with 4:12 left.

6:45: About to start the second half. Don’t forget that Blessed Sacrament had an 18-point lead in the second half on St. Agnes two weeks ago and blew it. I can’t imagine that wasn’t part of the halftime discussion.

6:37: Blessed Sacrament leads 36-23 at the half. David Samuels had 10 points in the second quarter and has 14 points and nine rebounds overall. Samuels is a 6-foot-7 sophomore who is going to be a stud. He had to put-back dunks in the second that made your jaw drop.

6:27: Marquis Patrick has come off the bench and hit two 3s for Blessed Sacrament. The Cardinals lead 29-13 with 3:25 left in the first half.

6:20: End of the first quarter. Blessed Sacrament leads 13-8. Jhared Hall has four points. Quick quarter. St. Agnes shot just 4 for 17 for the quarter. Yikes.

6:01 p.m.: Just checked into the wireless Internet here at Iona College and everything looks good. So I’ll be able to blog live updates from both CHSAA championship games.

The B Division final between Blessed Sacrament and St. Agnes is tipping off in four minutes. That will be followed by the A Division championship between Iona Prep and Bishop Ford will follow at 8 p.m.
